These Bootsies Are
Made for Walking…
But What if They’re
Having Problems?
This course
focuses on dogs and cats that are having PROBLEMS WALKING. We see these
patients everyday for lameness, limping, stumbling, weakness, problems
jumping or running, pain, walking “funny” or being unable to walk.
In some cases the cause is obvious. But other
cases can prove to be a diagnostic challenge. Orthopedic, neurological,
cardiovascular, and metabolic diseases can cause difficulty walking.
How do you differentiate between these possible causes? The key is our
examination skills. Thorough physical, orthopedic, and neurological
examinations are critical in making the diagnosis.
These Bootsies Are
Made for Walking…
How Can We Help Keep
Them Walking?
Once the diagnosis
is made, appropriate therapy can be instituted to help our patients
keep walking. Surgery may be the definitive therapy for some
neurological or orthopedic problems. In other cases, medical management
with glucocorticoids or NSAIDS may be indicated. The importance of
rehabilitation is increasingly being recognized in veterinary medicine
as an essential aspect of therapy for orthopedic and neurological
patients. Complementary therapy with acupuncture and spinal
manipulation is also gaining a wider acceptance in treating these
patients.
